Details of Rules for Naming Public Facilities

The official gazette published the rules for naming public facilities, which have been recently approved by the Cabinet.

The rules shall come into effect 120 days after their publication in the official gazette.

Public facilities are defined as publicly owned properties, including municipal, educational, cultural, sports, religious, healthcare, and transportation facilities.

Under the rules, no public facility may be named after any of the Kings of the Kingdom, Crown Princes, or leaders of friendly states, except after obtaining the approval of the Supreme Authority.

In addition, public facilities may not be named in a manner that violates the Shariah, nor may it be named after the Most Beautiful Names of Allah, with the exception of the following names: Al-Salam, Al-Adl, Al-Awwal, Al-Noor, Al-Haqq, Al-Shaheed, and Al-Malik.

Under the rules, each government entity is responsible for naming the public facilities within its jurisdiction in accordance with these rules and relevant regulations.

Entities must also verify the soundness of the orientations and views of the individual after whom a public facility is to be named, as well as the cleanliness of their record from criminal or security-related cases, in coordination with the relevant authorities. In naming public facilities, due consideration must be given to ensuring that the facility’s name is commensurate with the standing and stature of the individual after whom it is named.
