Earnings per share (EPS) is a key metric of a company's profitability. It is calculated by dividing a company's net profit by the number of outstanding shares of its common stock.
In 2022, the telecom sector reported the largest growth in EPS year on year. The sector’s EPS grew by more than sixfold vs. the year before, making telecom the best performing sector in Qatar by EPS growth.
Stocks in the real estate sector came in second, on average, as the overall sector’s profit per share grew by 32% vs. the year before.
The worst performing sector by EPS growth last year was insurance, as its constituents reported a drop in EPS of 174% vs 2021.
As a rule of thumb, growth investors should look for companies with EPS growth of, say, 20% or more, as EPS growth shows how rapidly a company is able to boost its "bottom line" on a per-share basis.
Stay tuned to find out in our next post which stocks reported the largest EPS growth last year.
