Omani company Etco Space and UK-based Open Cosmos have signed a cooperation agreement to develop satellite technology and Earth observation capabilities, strengthen geospatial solutions, and facilitate knowledge transfer and technical training.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Abdulaziz bin Amer Al-Sawa’i, CEO of Etco Space, and Jordi Barrera, Chief Technology Officer of Open Cosmos.
The partnership expands cooperation between Oman and the United Kingdom in space technology and advanced technologies, with a focus on applying satellite-based solutions to meet the needs of various sectors.
Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Sawa’i said that the agreement would create opportunities to strengthen satellite monitoring capabilities through access to high-quality satellite imagery. It will also support knowledge transfer and the development of technical and technological expertise.
According to Al-Sawa’i, Etco Space intends to use the partnership to enhance ground-monitoring capabilities for coastal surveillance and environmental pollution monitoring in Oman’s territorial waters. The cooperation will also cover applications in the security, defense, energy, and minerals sectors.
The agreement broadens collaboration between the two companies in satellite technologies, Earth observation, and geospatial data. These capabilities can provide information for monitoring environmental conditions, assessing coastal areas, and supporting operational decisions across several industries.
The partnership also includes knowledge-transfer and capacity-building initiatives intended to strengthen local technical capabilities and expand the use of space-based technologies in Oman.
Etco Space is a government endowment company operating under the umbrella of the Muscat Quran Fund and its associated electronic applications. The company supports development sectors and communities by providing space-related services and technologies and facilitating knowledge transfer.
Open Cosmos is a UK-based space technology company. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two companies as Oman continues to develop the applications of satellite technology and geospatial data across its economy.
