More than half of the QSE’s market value is concentrated in just five stocks.
Looking across 54 listed names, the five largest companies shown here account for 55.7% of total
market capitalization, leaving the other 49 stocks with a combined 44.3%.
The concentration is particularly visible at the top. Qatar National Bank (QNBK) alone represents 26.0%
of the market value covered, or roughly one quarter of the total. It is followed by Industries Qatar
(IQCD) at 10.2%, Qatar Islamic Bank (QIBK) at 8.7%, Ooredoo (ORDS) at 6.9% and Nakilat (QGTS) at 3.9%.
Market capitalization measures the total market value of a company’s outstanding shares. Looking at
each company’s share of total market cap therefore helps show how much of the market’s value is
concentrated in its biggest names.
For investors in Qatar, this is an important lens when looking at the market as a whole. A portfolio can
hold several QSE stocks and still have meaningful exposure to a relatively small group of large
companies, depending on how those holdings are weighted.
It also helps put broad market movements into context: not every listed company carries the same
weight.
Diversification isn’t only about how many stocks you own. It’s also about how much each one
represents.
