Oman, UK Sign Agreements on Space Cooperation, AI in Education

Oman and the United Kingdom (UK) have signed two letters of intent on space cooperation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education during Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to the UK.

Oman Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi and Education Minister Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibani signed the letters on behalf of Oman. Dr. Alice Bunn, Co-Director of the UK Space Agency, and Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, signed on behalf of the UK.

The first letter aims to strengthen space cooperation through the exchange of expertise in space policy, scientific research, and innovation between the UK Space Agency and the Omani government. The second focuses on responsible AI use in education, English-language learning, and helping teachers integrate AI safely and effectively into classrooms.

Oman-UK education partnership to launch AI pilot project

Dr. Madiha stated that the agreement with the British Council will expand educational cooperation and explore AI-driven approaches to teaching and learning, in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s technological transformation goals.

The partnership will support the design and implementation of a pilot project in selected secondary schools in Oman to improve students’ English communication skills, particularly speaking and writing, strengthen their job readiness, and prepare them for higher education programs taught in English.

AI training to support teachers, protect student data

The project will also train teachers to use AI-powered learning tools and tailor educational activities to Omani curricula and participating schools’ needs. It will follow safeguards for the safe and responsible use of technology and the protection of students and their data.

The two sides will evaluate the pilot project against mutually agreed indicators to assess its outcomes, improve teaching practices, and identify opportunities for expansion, supporting evidence-based decision-making. Dr. Madiha said the partnership aims to leverage shared expertise to develop innovative learning environments and equip students with English-language proficiency and skills needed for the future.
