Qatar Chamber hosted yesterday a delegation of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) led by Secretary-General Roberto Suárez Santos. The meeting was held in the presence of Qatar Chamber general manager Saleh bin Hamad al-Sharqi and Engineer Naser al-Meer, representative of employers at Qatar Chamber.
Speaking at the meeting, al-Sharqi stressed that Qatar Chamber is eager to enhance co-operation with the organisation. He noted that Qatar offers an attractive business environment through its economic legislation that stimulates foreign investments and the developed infrastructure that attracts international businessmen to invest in the state.
Al-Meer stressed that Qatar has made great strides in the field of labour rights by adopting a set of legislation and reforms that reflect the state’s commitment to providing a suitable and safe work environment, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
He also noted that Qatar Chamber, as a representative of the private sector, is playing an important role in such reforms, and stressed that the chamber supported government efforts to legislate an appropriate climate for investment. Al-Meer underscored the chamber’s support for the workers’ rights and the adoption of the best international standards that ensure a safe and appropriate work environment. He said Qatar is committed to combating climate change and has enacted laws on this issue, citing Qatar’s hosting of the first environmentally-sustainable FIFA World Cup ever in the history of the tournament.
“As business owners, we must contribute to preserving our planet from climate change and must have an active role in this regard,” he stressed. Al-Meer praised the IOE’s participation in the 5th UN Conference on LDCs, affirming that it emphasised its leading role in sustainable development and in the efforts to help least developed countries.
“The Private Sector Forum, which is being held on the sidelines of the LDC5 conference constitutes an important platform for all participants to share ideas and experiences and address the challenges it faces in sustainable development,” al-Meer said. For his part, Santos praised the significant development Qatar witnesses in terms of the economy and infrastructure. He said the IOE delegations include representatives from 27 countries who are keen to participate in the UN conference.
