Qatar and Saudi Arabia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation across a wide range of energy sectors, reinforcing the two countries’ commitment to expanding collaboration in traditional and clean energy, sustainability and climate change mitigation.
The agreement was signed by Minister of State for Energy Affairs HE Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi and Saudi Minister of Energy HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud on the sidelines of the 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting and the 25th WPC Energy Congress, being held in Riyadh as part of Riyadh Energy Week.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation in key areas of the energy industry, including oil and natural gas and their derivatives, refining, petrochemicals, electricity, clean hydrogen and its derivatives, renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy storage.
It also provides for collaboration in developing and deploying technologies aimed at reducing emissions and addressing climate change. These include carbon capture, transportation, reuse and storage solutions, reflecting the growing importance of technological innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
In addition to technical and industry-specific cooperation, the agreement emphasises strengthening coordination between the two countries in international energy and sustainability initiatives. It also provides for enhanced cooperation on climate change-related matters within relevant international frameworks and platforms.
The agreement is expected to provide a basis for closer engagement between Qatar and Saudi Arabia across the energy value chain, covering both established industries and emerging areas associated with the energy transition.
The MoU will enter into force following the completion of the relevant legal procedures in both Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
