UAE Temporary Work Permit: How To Apply, Fees, All You Need To Know

The UAE allows jobseekers to legally work for an employer for a period of six months. However, the employee will require a temporary work permit, issued by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

The temporary work permit can also be applied if you wish to work for two employees in the country, however, your primary employer must allow you to work part-time for the secondary employer.

On Monday, the MoHRE reminded jobseekers in the UAE of the temporary work permit. 

“The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation provides the service of issuing a temporary work permit for an establishment registered with the Ministry, which wishes to employ a worker in work whose nature requires a specific period,” the authority said via Twitter.


That being said, here is all you need to know about the temporary work permit in UAE.

How to apply for the UAE temporary work permit

A temporary work permit allows companies in the UAE to hire a worker to complete a job within a specific period. 

MoHRE offers the service of issuing a temporary work permit, hiring for a specific time and task(s), for establishments registered with the Ministry.


That being said, here is how you can apply for a temporary work permit, which is valid for six months. The requirements are as follows: 

  • A clear photograph of the employee with a white background is required.
  • A copy of the passport is needed, with a validity of not less than six months.
  • The Standard Employment Contract Form, signed by both employer and employee, is necessary.
  • An academic certificate is required for skill levels one and two only, attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. State-issued certificates are exempted.
  • A professional license issued by a relevant competent authority, such as doctors, nurses, teachers, and advocates, is needed. Examples of such licenses are those issued by the Ministry of Health for doctors and nurses, and those issued by the Ministry of Education, Knowledge Authority, Abu Dhabi Education Council, and Sharjah Education Council for teachers and teacher assistants.
  • The current employer must approve the e-form to obtain a temporary work permit.
  • An employee with a pending labor case must fill out a form issued by the court of existing labor case to obtain the permit.

The temporary work permit can be applied via the MoHRE website , MOHRE smart app, Business Service Centers, TAW-SEEL.

Terms and conditions for applying for the temporary work permit

  • The employee must be at least 18 years old.
  • The employee must meet the requirements specified in the relevant legislation for certain professions or those that require a professional license.
  • The employee’s profession must be related to the establishment’s activity.
  • The establishment must have a valid license with no legal violations leading to the suspension of its activities.
  • The application for a temporary work permit must be submitted by the establishment’s authorised signatory.
  • The current employer must approve the e-form to obtain a temporary work permit, except in the case of an employee with a pending labor case.
  • The permit can be granted only once, and a new application can be submitted once it expires.
  • No insurance or bank guarantee is necessary to obtain the permit.
  • All professions and skill levels are eligible for this permit, depending on the service requirements.
  • An e-quota is not required to obtain a temporary work permit.

Submitting an application

  • You can submit your application using several channels: MoHRE website, MOHRE smart app, Business Service Centers, TAW-SEEL.
  • Your online application will be referred to the Ministry for verification.
  • If there are any missing requirements (nawakis), you will be notified to complete them.
  • Once all requirements and documents are complete, your temporary work permit will be approved.
  • Once your permit application is approved, your contract will also be approved online.
  • You will need to pay the prescribed federal fees once your application is approved.

It will take about two days for the application to be processed, and the applicant will be notified once the application is complete.

Fees for temporary work permit:

  • Business service centres commission fee up to AED72 
  • Federal Fee AED50

It is worth noting that the service is free of charge via MOHRE website or the smart app, except for federal fee.
